New Cities and Migration – An international debate edited by Roberto Bologna
This book is the result of the studies carried out in the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. The volumes are subject to a qualitative process of acceptance and evaluation based on peer review, which is entrusted to the Scientific Publications Committee of the Department of Architecture (DIDA) with blind review system. Furthermore, all publications are available on an open-access basis on the Internet, which not only favors their diffusion, but also fosters an effective evaluation from the entire international scientific community.

Ma’arat al Numan: The resilience of a Syrian city at war
Training specialists in reconstruction: Université Populaire Syrienne
Overview : The Syrian city of Ma’arat al Numan, a symbol of countless legendary stories of conquest and liberation, was one of the first cities to participate in the popular democratic uprising of March 2011. “Liberated” in October 2012, today 70% of the city lies in ruins, having lost a large part of its population and almost all of its infrastructure and public buildings.
Thanks to the action of local coordinating committees, neighborhood associations and NGOs, the population is trying as well as possible to rebuild, confronting the immensity of human loss and destruction with pitifully limited means.
Our association – Ila Souria – has been working for over two years towards the launch of a pilot center of the Université Populaire Syrienne(Syrian Popular University or Syrian Adult Education*) in Ma’arat al Numan.For more than a year we’ve been engaged in training reconstruction specialists in architecture, urban planning and sustainable reconstruction, using these experiences in the city to refine the approach. This training is part of a project called “Tahdir,” initiated by the European Union. We’re partners in the project, along with the Olof Palme International Center in Stockholm, and the Arab Reform Initiative in Paris. 02/20/2017

Ma’arat al Numan, résilience d’une ville syrienne en guerre
Formation de spécialistes de la reconstruction (Université Populaire Syrienne)
Résumé : Ma’arat al Numan, cité syrienne, symbolique de multiples et glorieuses histoires de conquêtes et de libérations fut une des premières villes à avoir participé au soulèvement populaire et démocratique de mars 2011. « Libérée » en octobre 2012, elle est aujourd’hui dévastée à 70%, ayant perdu une grande partie de sa population et la presque totalité de ses infrastructures et bâtiments publics.
Grâce à l’action des “comités locaux de coordination“, d’associations de quartiers et d’ONG, la population, autant les locaux que des « migrants internes » venus d’autres villes ravagées par la guerre (comme Alep), essaye tant bien que mal de (se) reconstruire, avec des moyens dérisoires face à l’immensité des pertes humaines et des destructions matérielles.
Notre association Ila Souria tente depuis plus de deux ans d’y initier un centre pilote de l’Université Populaire Syrienne et s’est engagée depuis plus d’un an dans la formation de spécialistes de la reconstruction en « Architecture, urbanisme : reconstruction durable » ; en prenant cette ville comme terrain d’expérimentation. Formation faisant partie d’un projet dénommé « Tahdir », initié par l’Union européenne. Nous participons à ce dessein aux côtés de l’Olof Palme Center, Stockholm, et de l’association Arab Reform Intiative, Paris. 14/03/2017
