A Living Pedestrian Bridge Over The Nile
The Rifat Chadirji Prize 2020
November 2020

Emta Al Zaman “ (A famous song by Mohammed Abdel Wahab, which begins, “When will the time allow us my beautiful, to spend the night on the shore of the Nile”) is a living bridge that links the two banks of the Nile through two refined gestures, a curve and a straight line.

A curve, to stroll; from the Egyptian Museum to the 6th October Bridge, with vertical links to the two corniches and a cross connection with the straight gesture “Souk Al Zaman.”.

This Souk is a dynamic space where Egyptians of all generations may explore and expose their creativity, through areas essentially dedicated to all forms of Art in addition to commercial and touristic activities.

Composed of a corridor with two rows of cells, 16 of which are modular and can accommodate a shifting array of activities thanks to a system of vertically mobile platforms that generates different volumetric compositions, reinforced by the presence of freight elevators with a horizontal sliding system on the facades to module the cells from the exterior. The remaining cells are open or enclosed spaces with a fixed program.

The facades are animated by moving “pixel panels” that conceal or reveal the interiors. Their variant perforations along with the 11 axes on the terrace directed towards emblematic places of Cairo form lighting elements.

It is an Autonomous living bridge thanks to solar (photovoltaic panels along the terrace sides), hydraulic (turbines within the pillars) and kinetic (smart flooring system throughout main circulation areas) energies.
